Accra, Ghana – President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E John Dramani Mahama, has reiterated his unwavering commitment to strengthening the institution of chieftaincy and expanding the role of traditional leaders beyond symbolic and ceremonial functions.
Addressing the Western Regional House of Chiefs during a courtesy call at the Presidency, President Mahama emphasized the pivotal role of traditional rulers in the country’s cultural preservation, community cohesion, and grassroots governance.
“Nananom, your role as custodians of this heritage cannot be overstated. You are the moral compass, the voice of continuity and the guardians of community cohesion,” he said.
Recognizing the deep-rooted influence of chiefs across generations, President Mahama pledged to grant the institution the respect and support it rightfully deserves.
“For this reason, I remain firmly committed to giving the institution of Chieftaincy the recognition, respect and the support that it deserves,” he stated.
He further acknowledged that achieving sustainable national development requires the active involvement of traditional authorities, especially given their unique proximity to the people and their deep understanding of local needs.
“I believe that no sustainable development can occur without the active involvement of our traditional leaders. You are closest to the people. You know their needs, you mediate their disputes and you preserve our cultural identities and our values,” he said.
President Mahama gave a firm assurance that under his leadership, traditional leaders will no longer be confined to ceremonial appearances but will be actively involved in national development efforts.
“Under my administration, we will elevate the role of Chiefs beyond just ceremonial functions,” he said.
