Meet 77-year-old Mama Acheampong — the woman who discovered Ghanaian music legend Daddy Lumba in 1982 and later became his adopted mother.
In an emotional recollection, Mama Acheampong shared intimate memories of Lumba’s early struggles, including one of the most painful chapters in his life — losing his girlfriend while he was still finding his feet abroad.
According to her, Daddy Lumba was deeply in love with a young woman before leaving Ghana to pursue his dreams in Germany. But as he toiled in a foreign land, facing financial hardship and trying to break into the music industry, the unexpected happened — his girlfriend was given out in marriage without his knowledge.
“It broke him,” she said. “He was young, full of dreams, and believed they had a future together. But while he was hustling out there, she got married. It was one of the hardest moments I saw him go through.”
Mama Acheampong, who first discovered Lumba’s talent as a teenager, took him under her wing and supported his musical journey.
Her home became a refuge for the budding star, and their bond grew so strong that he began referring to her as “Mama.”
Today, the late Daddy Lumba is celebrated as one of Ghana’s greatest musical icons, but behind the fame lies a story of love, loss, and resilience — one that Mama Acheampong says helped shape the emotional depth in many of his timeless songs.
“He turned his pain into music. That heartbreak, as sad as it was, helped give birth to the Lumba we know today,” she added.
Her account offers fans a rare glimpse into the personal life of the legendary musician, reminding us that behind every great artist is a journey filled with struggle, sacrifice, and silent heartbreak.
