Accra, August 3, 2025 – The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has suspended the manufacture of Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix with immediate effect following serious safety concerns at the Nutrifoods Ghana Limited factory.
In a public statement, the FDA revealed that the decision follows multiple consumer complaints and a subsequent investigation into the company’s manufacturing processes, which uncovered critical lapses in equipment maintenance and quality control systems.
According to the FDA, these failures compromised the integrity of the tomato mix products, particularly the canned versions and pouch variants (380g and 1.05kg). The poor sealing mechanisms reportedly led to contamination, product bloating, and the presence of mold in some batches.
As part of its response, the Authority has already directed a market recall of all canned products and the affected pouch sizes. The move is aimed at protecting public health and ensuring that contaminated goods are removed from shelves as quickly as possible.
What’s more alarming is that Nutrifoods had previously been barred from manufacturing the product as far back as January 2025, raising questions about internal oversight and compliance enforcement. The FDA has therefore launched an internal probe to determine whether any regulatory lapses occurred within the Authority itself.
“In line with our commitment to transparency and accountability, we are taking steps to identify and address any dereliction of duty that may have contributed to this situation,” the statement read.
The FDA is urging consumers, retailers, and wholesalers to take note of the suspension and comply with the recall directive. The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to strict regulatory oversight and pledged to take any further action necessary to protect the health and safety of the Ghanaian public.
