A dramatic scene unfolded in Adabraka, Accra, when 31-year-old Police Corporal Awudu Alhassan Shaban allegedly pulled a loaded rifle on fellow officers to free a narcotics suspect.
The incident occurred during a Drug Law Enforcement Unit (DLEU) raid on a ghetto near the TUC building, targeting an Accra Technical University student linked to drug use and trade.
As officers attempted to cuff the suspect, Shaban—dressed in police trousers and a singlet—reportedly arrived with a rifle loaded with 20 rounds, threatening to shoot Detective Inspector James Brobbey if the suspect wasn’t released. The DLEU team, fearing for their safety, let the suspect go.
However, the officers later overpowered and arrested Shaban. A search revealed 24 wraps of suspected cannabis, a police shirt with his name, a helmet, a muffler, and cigarettes. He and two others are now facing trial.
