Who Is Sekyiwa Shakur? Meet Tupac Shakur’s Younger Sister
Sekyiwa Shakur is the younger half-sister of legendary American rapper Tupac Shakur, whose influence on hip-hop and popular culture continues to endure decades after his death.
Often known as “Set,” Sekyiwa is the daughter of Afeni Shakur, a prominent political activist and member of the Black Panther Party, who also raised Tupac. While Tupac became one of the most celebrated and influential rappers in music history, Sekyiwa has largely maintained a lower public profile, focusing on her personal life and efforts to preserve her family’s legacy.
Born on October 3, 1975, Sekyiwa grew up alongside Tupac during a period marked by financial struggles, family challenges and frequent changes in their living circumstances. Their mother, Afeni, played a central role in their upbringing, instilling in them a strong sense of identity, resilience and awareness of social injustice.
Tupac, born Lesane Parish Crooks on June 16, 1971, was later renamed Tupac Amaru Shakur. He rose to international fame through his music, which addressed issues including poverty, racism, violence, inequality and the experiences of marginalised communities.
Despite the four-year age difference between them, Tupac and Sekyiwa shared a close family bond. His death in September 1996, following a fatal shooting in Las Vegas, was a devastating loss for Sekyiwa and the rest of their family.
Following Tupac’s death, Sekyiwa continued to play a role in keeping his memory alive. She has been associated with the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation, an organisation established to support young people through arts, education and community programmes.
Her mother, Afeni Shakur, also worked to protect and manage Tupac’s legacy before her death in May 2016. Sekyiwa subsequently became an important figure in the family’s efforts to preserve the late rapper’s contributions and humanitarian ideals.
Although she does not command the same level of public attention as her famous brother, Sekyiwa has helped maintain the connection between Tupac’s personal story and the lasting cultural influence of his music.
Tupac remains a defining figure in hip-hop, remembered for his poetic storytelling, political consciousness and willingness to confront difficult social issues. Through her family ties and work associated with his legacy, Sekyiwa Shakur remains connected to the story of one of music’s most enduring icons.
