WAFCON Controversy: Morocco FA Petitions CAF Over Referee’s Penalty Decision in Final Clash with Nigeria

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has officially filed a petition to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), calling for disciplinary action against the referee who officiated the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final between Morocco and Nigeria.

According to the Moroccan FA, the referee failed to award what they believe was a clear penalty in a crucial moment of the match — a decision they argue may have changed the outcome of the highly competitive final.

Morocco went on to lose the match to Nigeria, who were eventually crowned WAFCON champions.

In a strongly worded statement, the Moroccan FA expressed disappointment in the officiating, citing that such errors undermine the integrity of the competition and the years of hard work invested by the players and coaching staff.

The call for review has reignited debates across African football circles about the quality of refereeing in high-stakes matches.

Many fans and pundits have taken to social media, some supporting Morocco’s claims while others defend the match officials, citing the fast-paced nature of the game and the complexity of the call.

CAF is yet to officially respond to the petition, but the development adds further drama to what was already a fiercely contested tournament finale.

The spotlight now turns to CAF’s Refereeing Committee, as stakeholders across the continent await their verdict on the matter.
