Tamale High Court Sentences UDS Student to Death for Murder of Fellow Student

The Tamale High Court has sentenced Salifu Nurudeen, a Level 100 student of the University for Development Studies (UDS), to death after finding him guilty of the murder of fellow student Mohammed Zakiu Wumpini.

The tragic incident, which shocked the university community and the wider Northern Region, involved the brutal killing of Mohammed Zakiu, a Level 200 Pharmacy student.

Investigations led by the police revealed that the motive behind the crime stemmed from a personal relationship dispute.

According to court proceedings and police reports, Salifu Nurudeen was arrested after authorities discovered the victim’s mobile phone in his possession.

This key piece of evidence was instrumental in linking him to the crime.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the convict had developed a deep resentment toward Mr. Wumpini after discovering that the victim was in a romantic relationship with his ex-girlfriend. Enraged by jealousy, Nurudeen reportedly attacked Zakiu in a fit of anger.

Further investigations uncovered that after the murder, Nurudeen used the deceased person’s phone to send breakup messages to the lady at the center of the triangle, possibly in an attempt to cover his tracks or mislead authorities. These actions eventually led to his arrest and prosecution.

Although he admitted to sending the messages from the deceased’s phone, Salifu Nurudeen pleaded not guilty to the murder charge. The court, however, found sufficient evidence to convict him, and he was subsequently sentenced to death.

The ruling brings a painful but necessary closure to the case, as the family and friends of the late Mohammed Zakiu Wumpini continue to mourn their loss. The University for Development Studies is yet to issue an official statement.

This case underscores the devastating consequences of unchecked emotional conflict and highlights the need for mental health awareness and conflict resolution among students and young adults.
