President John Dramani Mahama has expressed gratitude to the donors, medical professionals, crew, volunteers and Ghanaian partners supporting the Mercy Ships mission in Ghana.
He said the successful deployment of the Global Mercy could not have been achieved without the contributions of the many individuals and organisations involved in bringing and operating the hospital ship in Ghana.
Speaking during an inspection and tour of the vessel, President Mahama thanked everyone who had contributed to the mission.
“I welcome Mercy Ships back to Ghana and thank every person who has helped bring this mission here, its donors, medical team, the crew, volunteers and especially our Ghanaian partners,” he said.
The President singled out Ghanaian volunteers for their contribution to the mission, praising them for giving their time and skills to patients.
“To the crew I say thank you, the captain and crew and especially to the Ghanaian volunteers. I thank you for offering your time and skill to people you may never meet again,” he said.
President Mahama also acknowledged Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams and other friends of Mercy Ships who have worked to sustain the organisation’s partnership with Ghana.
He said their efforts had contributed to making the current mission possible.
The Global Mercy is currently providing free specialised surgeries to Ghanaian patients, including treatment for cataracts, cleft lips and palates, tumours and childhood orthopaedic conditions.
Beyond surgery, the mission is also providing opportunities for Ghanaian healthcare professionals to work alongside international specialists.
President Mahama said Ghanaian surgeons, anaesthesia professionals, nurses and other health workers could gain valuable knowledge and experience through the partnership.
He urged the health professionals involved to use the experience to serve patients throughout their careers.
The President also assured Mercy Ships that government would provide practical support to ensure that the mission operates effectively.
He said relevant government agencies must work together to facilitate patient movement, medical supplies and other operational requirements.
President Mahama welcomed Mercy Ships back to Ghana and expressed the hope that the current mission would leave a lasting impact on patients and the country’s health system.
