President John Dramani Mahama has directed that stalled housing projects across the country be revived and accelerated as part of efforts to increase Ghana’s housing stock.
He said government would make effective use of government and institutional land banks while supporting private investment to deliver decent and affordable housing at scale.
President Mahama made the announcement on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at the opening of the National Conference on Housing Finance in Accra.
He disclosed that government was targeting the completion of 1,500 housing units at Saglemi by next year.
“At Saglemi, the programme aims to complete the 1,500 units by next year,” he said.
The President also announced that the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources, in collaboration with the National Housing Fund, was piloting a district housing programme in eight districts.
He said the government intended to accelerate the district housing programme in the next financial year.
Other projects, including the Tema Development Corporation’s Oxygen City in Ho in the Volta Region and the State Housing Company’s Green City in Dedesua in the Ashanti Region, are also expected to increase the country’s housing stock.
President Mahama, however, stressed that the focus should not be limited to the number of houses constructed.
He said housing projects must provide complete communities with roads, water, drainage systems, sanitation, schools, healthcare and other essential social facilities.
“A lower purchase price offers little relief if a family must spend excessively on commuting or securing basic services,” he said.
The President said housing developments must therefore be properly integrated with infrastructure and economic activity.
He also called for housing to be incorporated into the planning of industrial enclaves so that workers can live closer to their workplaces.
According to him, proximity between homes and workplaces could reduce transportation costs, improve productivity and give workers more time with their families.
President Mahama said government’s broader housing strategy would combine the revival of stalled projects with innovative financing mechanisms to ensure that more Ghanaians can access decent and affordable accommodation.
