President John Dramani Mahama has called for the development of financing mechanisms that will support the construction of green and affordable housing in Ghana.
He said sustainable building priorities must be converted into projects that financial institutions and investors can confidently finance.
President Mahama made the call on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, when he opened the two-day National Conference on Housing Finance in Accra.
As part of the concrete outcomes expected from the conference, the President called for the establishment of a technical working group on green affordable housing finance.
The group, he said, should bring together the relevant ministry and development partners to transform sustainable building priorities into investable projects.
“I urge participants to pursue the concrete outcomes proposed for this conference,” President Mahama said.
He said the green housing initiative should form part of the broader effort to develop innovative financing mechanisms for Ghana’s housing sector.
The President stressed that every financing instrument considered at the conference must be assessed based on whether it lowers costs, expands access and remains financially sustainable.
He also called for greater use of blended finance, where carefully targeted public and concessional financing can be used to attract private investment into viable housing projects.
President Mahama said Ghana must mobilise long-term capital from pension funds, insurers, development finance institutions and diaspora investors to support housing projects.
He noted that housing investments require financing structures suited to their long-term nature.
The President further called for stronger coordination between land administration, planning approvals, infrastructure provision and housing finance.
He said delays and uncertainty in these areas increase the cost of housing and ultimately transfer the burden to households.
President Mahama stressed that affordable housing must also be safe, accessible and connected to essential services.
He said the government’s housing agenda should therefore focus not only on the number of houses delivered but also on the quality, sustainability and overall affordability of the communities created.
The President said the outcome of the conference would ultimately be measured by tangible improvements in the lives of Ghanaian families.
