“We Don’t Know Which Day We Were Born in Nigeria” – Peller Replies Shatta Wale
Nigerian online streamer and content creator Habeeb Hamzat, popularly known as Peller, has sparked reactions after revealing that many Nigerians do not know the day of the week on which they were born, unlike the Ghanaian tradition of naming children after the days of the week.
Peller made the revelation during a video interaction with Ghanaian musicians, including dancehall star Shatta Wale and Papi of 5Five fame.
During the interaction, Peller expressed interest in adopting the name Kofi, a traditional Ghanaian name given to males born on Friday.
Shatta Wale subsequently asked Peller about his day of birth, explaining that the day on which he was born would help determine his corresponding Ghanaian day name.
However, Peller responded with surprise, saying, “We no no that for Nigeria oo,” suggesting that although Nigerians know their dates of birth, they may not necessarily know the corresponding days of the week.
In Ghana, children are traditionally given day names based on the day of the week on which they are born, with distinct names for males and females.
The practice is deeply rooted in Ghanaian culture and is observed among several ethnic groups.
Peller’s response appeared to surprise Shatta Wale and the other musicians, who were familiar with the Ghanaian naming tradition.
He was eventually told that he could adopt the name Yaw, the traditional Ghanaian name for a male born on Thursday.
